With news of the writers’ strike affecting soaps and late night television, now might be a great time to catch up on some TV series or movies that you may have missed binge-watching during the pandemic. If given the choice I will always default to Action/Adventure, but there are occasions when I’m in the mood to be creeped out, and a recent find on Apple+ did just that.
CALLS was released two years ago in March of 2021, and some big name stars lent their voice talents to the episodes including Pedro Pascal, Jennifer Tilly, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Judy Greer, Karen Gillian, Rosario Dawson and Nick Jonas along with many others. I did say voice talents since CALLS features 9 episodes of phone calls. No actors faces are ever shown, just oscilloscope like graphics that react to each character’s voice. It’s a novel idea, but what grabs the viewer is the conversations taking place that sound like a plot from The Outer Limits or Twilight Zone.
Each of the nine episodes could stand on its own, but as the viewer progresses from Episode One: The End, a threat appears that takes these seemingly disconnected strangers down the path to some Apocalypse.
The episodes run from thirteen to twenty minutes long so it won’t take you an entire weekend to devour the entire series. If you’re searching for something to watch and cuddle up to your significant other with, I give CALLS a thumbs up to binge.
